Where I Belong
Original painting, 2026
100 × 90 cm
Acrylic on canvas
Where I Belong is a celebration of taking your place and feeling at home in your own world.
Inspired by Matisse’s use of bold colour, decorative interiors and organic forms, the visual energy of Pop Art, and the vibrant patterns of African wax textiles, this painting brings these influences together through my own contemporary perspective.
At the centre, a Black woman sits calmly surrounded by flowers, patterns and saturated colour. Her presence is quiet yet assured. She is not waiting to be welcomed into the space; she already belongs.
The abundance surrounding her becomes a metaphor for creating a world of your own: a place where you can exist fully, take up space and feel at home.
Where I Belong continues my exploration of belonging, identity and representation, while placing Black figures within scenes of beauty, leisure and everyday life.
